Fear of flying and understanding
One of the books I read when first afflicted with a mild fear of flying, made a statement that resonates still: “Fear and Understanding are opposite states”.
Since reading that I have wondered if it is 100% true in all circumstances but it does seem to apply to fear of flying. Often times in flight things that are unexpected or unknown cause the anxiety and, for most of us who don’t fly all the time, many things can fall into that category!
Turbulence is unexpected to us, but routine and understood by those who fly regularly. Noises made by a plane in flight are similarly common and understood.
Learning about flying and what the experiences mean, is a great way to lesson the anxiety of the whole experience. The resources on this page can be really helpful in this quest to understand what is going on in the air!
